The grout question — the most important paragraph on this page
Marbelite's known vulnerability is aggressive water: water low in calcium and drifting acidic leaches calcium out of the cement matrix and slowly etches the surface. Every South African pool owner who has been told to watch their calcium hardness has been told this.
A tiled pool does not escape that chemistry. It relocates it. ARDEX's published technical guidance on pool grouting says that soft, acidic water is "hungry" for calcium and "will leach minerals from cement-based grout, weakening its structure", and that aggressive water "dissolves calcium salts in cement-based grouts, leading to erosion and loss of bond". Same mechanism, same soluble calcium — applied to roughly 2 mm of cement every 20-odd millimetres instead of the whole surface.
Now the part that matters in South Africa. ARDEX's stated trigger is specific: "Where calcium levels are below 250 mg/litre, epoxy grout is strongly advised." South Africa's standard target band for calcium hardness is 200–400 ppm — and one South African marbelite applicator publishes its own recommended range as 200–275 ppm. A South African pool run correctly, to the local trade's own specification, will spend much or most of its life below 250 mg/litre.
We should be clear about what that is and is not. It is our cross-reference of a British grout manufacturer's threshold against South African water-chemistry convention; neither source makes the comparison, and neither is talking about the other. But the conclusion follows plainly enough to act on: if you are tiling a pool in South Africa, ask for epoxy grout, and get the grout class written into the quote. Under BS EN 13888, cementitious grouts are CG1 or CG2WA and are described as best suited to balanced hard water; reaction resin — epoxy — is described as impervious, chemically resistant and suited to aggressive water and soft-water areas. Epoxy costs roughly seven to twenty times as much per kilogram. On a pool it is a small share of the total job and it is the difference between the grout being a consumable and not.
Two honest caveats. Epoxy is not maintenance-proof — ARDEX notes that improper cleaning agents can damage grout, "even epoxy types". And the manufacturers making the epoxy recommendation also sell epoxy, which is worth remembering even when the underlying chemistry is not in dispute.
Scale, and the narrower set of safe answers
Scale still forms on a tiled pool. It is simply more visible, because it is sitting on glass.
Calcium carbonate scale does not easily redissolve at normal pool pH, so removal is mechanical or acidic, and on tile the safe options are fewer than on plaster. Pumice is not recommended on glass tile and can leave a hazy, scuffed look on a gloss glaze. Glass bead blasting works but can cut into the glaze and can damage grout if pressure is not carefully controlled; kieserite salt blasting is the gentler professional alternative. Proprietary acid scale removers dissolve the scale without attacking the glaze — but some contain hydrofluoric acid, which is genuinely dangerous and not a DIY product. For routine cleaning, tile suppliers point to pH-neutral cleaners and soft brushes, and away from metal tools and scouring pads.
The practical conclusion is unglamorous: the best scale strategy on a tiled pool is not letting scale establish. Balanced water is cheaper than any of the removal methods.
Can you acid wash a tiled pool?
Acid washing is standard South African practice on marbelite, at R2,000–R5,000. We could not find a technical source that says whether a full mosaic interior can be acid washed, and we are not going to guess. What we can tell you is the mechanism on either side: the tile body itself shrugs off strong acid, but a whole-interior acid wash is by definition aggressive water sitting against cementitious grout, which is precisely what erodes it. Limited acid contact is not automatically destructive — acidic cleaners are recommended by manufacturers for removing efflorescence from grout. The professional deep-clean for a tiled pool appears to be blasting rather than acid.
Ask your installer directly, before you need the answer, and if the grout is epoxy, ask whether that changes it.
What you actually do differently
Compared with a marbelite pool, a tiled pool owner:
- Brushes far less. South African marbelite guidance calls for brushing two to three times weekly, and daily for the first fortnight after a new finish. There is no tiled equivalent.
- Brushes grout lines specifically, since joints can collect algae and mineral deposits where a smooth tile face does not. (Sourced only to tile-industry material, so treat it as a reasonable routine rather than a measured requirement.)
- Watches the coping joint. The flexible joint where the pool meets the coping is described by one long-standing pool specialist as the single most common origin of tile failure in concrete pools. It is a maintenance item.
- Calls a tile setter, not a pool plasterer, for repairs — and may face a colour-matching problem years later, which is why storing spare sheets from the original batch is worth doing on day one.
- Has no start-up regime. Marbelite needs careful handling in its first weeks — pH held high, no acid for three weeks, hand brushing only. A tiled surface is inert from the day it is filled.
And one thing that goes the other way: marbelite has a known, budgeted renewal cycle — every 10 to 15 years at R30,000–R60,000. A tiled pool has no equivalent scheduled cost, which sounds better, but it also means there is no published timeline for when it will need work. No source we could find gives an honest failure horizon for a tiled pool in service. The mechanism is clear; the number does not exist.
South African conditions — and what we could not establish
Being straight about the limits here, because the sourcing on this section is weaker than the rest of the page.
On frost: the international failure mechanism is that water gets behind tiles and freezes, which requires sustained sub-zero conditions of a kind a filled pool on the Highveld does not produce. The only sourced material we found is Canadian, describing hard-freeze climates, and we are not going to import it unlabelled. No South African source on frost damage to pool tiling exists that we could find. Our reasoning says Highveld frost is not the risk it is in Ontario; that is reasoning, not evidence.
On the coast: grout guidance says coastal pools need salt-resistant grout formulations, and one manufacturer notes that salt can discolour natural stone and cause many slates to rust — so porcelain or glass is the safer specification at the coast, and natural stone the riskier one. No South African coastal source was found.
On salt-chlorinated pools, which are very common here: at the usual 2,500–3,500 ppm, glass mosaic itself is a non-issue on the laboratory evidence. Natural stone and travertine mosaics are not — salt water and salt deposits are reported to discolour them. As everywhere else on this page, the vulnerable component is the cementitious grout.
On sun: grout guidance recommends UV-stable grout systems and sealers for outdoor pools, which places the UV concern in the grout rather than the tile. Tile suppliers make colourfastness claims; none we found substantiates them with a standard or a test, so we are not repeating them.
On water hardness by region: we could not obtain South African municipal hardness figures. The one relevant, and unquantified, indication is that the Western Cape has traditionally been a soft-water area — which, if right, pushes exactly the wrong way for cementitious grout and makes the epoxy specification more important there, not less. Treat that as a flag to check your own supply, not as a finding.
One more absence worth knowing: the National Spa & Pool Institute of South Africa publishes no standard, code of practice or technical specification for pool tiling or interior finishes, and no SANS or SABS standard for it surfaced anywhere in our research. Every technical standard cited on this page is British. That is not a criticism of anyone — it is simply why a South African pool owner has nowhere local to look, and why the specification questions above are worth putting to your installer in writing.
